STONE DOCK

Originally a corn field, located one mile outside of High Falls, Stone Dock Golf Course was the vision of Tom Davenport. In 1969 he opened the course and saw his dream come true with the creation of a golf course that he had designed. Although he was not a professional golf course architect, Tom did a fine job and today Stone Dock is often complimented on its comfortable layout that takes advantage of the natural beauty of its surroundings. Two long holes, #5 - 565 yards and #7 - 520 yards, are challenging as they follow the gentle curve of the Rondout Creek, and also offer views of the distant and majestic mountain house and tower at Mohonk. When Tom sold the course to the Sciuto family in 1976, the new owners built approximately 25 A-frame houses along the course. These houses remain and most have been updated and or expanded. Today they add a special holiday look to the course. Thirteen years ago the course was sold to a group today headed by principal owner John North. A fire burned down the original rustic clubhouse and a new, larger and more efficient structure was built. Today, it’s the setting for banquets, tournaments, parties, weddings or a casual lunch or dinner after a day of golf. The restaurant welcomes the public to The Tapp Inn at the Tenth. Diners can keep a close check on the 9th green either from the dining room or the patio while enjoying a view all the way to the distant Rondout Creek! New golfers at Stone Dock will not leave without a lasting memory of the signature Par 5, 4th hole. Starting with the challenge of a drive over a pond, and a large tree setting at the brink of a steep hill, the golfer now faces another pond guarding the green with the Rondout Creek as the backdrop. The course offers 4 sets of tees – blue, white, yellow and red – and is suitable to golfers of various playing levels. Home to six weekly leagues, Stone Dock is a public golf course that has a special appeal to not only the serious golfer, but also beginners, juniors and family groups. Membership (greens fee passes) have grown in number over the past few years, most likely due to improvements in irrigation, drainage and the addition of new ponds. Stone Dock is a friendly place where golfers can easily pick up a playing partner without always needing a tee time, although it often pays to call ahead. Stone Dock is a successful blend of good golf and good fellowship. Despite some hills, the course is an easy walk . Renting a golf cart is always an option. As the season progresses, so do the floral displays at Stone Dock. By mid-summer the course and the areas around the clubhouse are in full bloom, making your lunch or dinner at The Tapp Inn a special treat. Last year, Stone Dock was selected to host the qualifying round for the Herdegen Championship. This year the course is proud to be hosting the final round of the Ulster County Women’s Golf Association on Monday, July 28, 2008.
