DINSMORE GOLF COURSE
Friday, 11 June 2010
USA's third oldest course is a popular Mid-Hudson destination Dinsmore Golf Course, located on Route 9 in Staatsburg (Dutchess County) is a scenic 18-hole course offering a panoramic view of the beautiful Hudson River and majestic Catskill Mountains. It is the third oldest golf course in the country. Built as a private 9-hole course in the 1890s, it was an amenity to the estates of the Dinsmore, Hoyt and Mills families. The land was donated by Helen Hull. The original course, which is now the south nine, was expanded to 18 holes in 1962. The original nine holes were used by the wealthy families of nearby estates such as the Astors, Livingstons, and Vanderbilts, and are now operated by the New York State Dept. of Parks and Recreation. While the golfers are on Dinsmore's hilly fairways, non-golfers can tour the elegant Staatsburgh Mansion with its vast collection of art and furnishings or visit the marine museum at the nearby Mills/Norrie State Park. Both the Mills estate and Norrie State Park are adjacent to Dinsmore. The 988-acre park includes the Mills Mansion State Historic Site. Scenic hiking trails and old carriage roads border the river. There is a marina with transient dockage and an environmental center, as well as camping and cabin facilities. Today, Dinsmore’s appealing layout and affordable rates make it a popular destination for golfers of all abilities. The course features two distinctive nine-hole layouts that can be played individually or as an 18-hole round. The south nine is the longer of the two at 3,230 yards from the white tees and plays to a par 36. It’s two par 3s are considered among the best in the region. The 14th is only 120 yards, but features a dramatic 100+ foot drop from tee to green. The 17th is a 198 yard gem that plays to a green nestled against a steep hillside and guarded front and right by bunkers. The north nine plays to 2,529 yards from the white tees and features four par 3s. The 120-yard 4th hole plays to a small green guarded by OB to the left, trouble to the back and a hazard to the right. The 130 yard 6th hole, playing to a severely elevated and blind green, is memorable for the climb players face after teeing off. The north nine also features two mid-length downhill par 5s. The finishing hole is a challenging 371-yard par 4 to an elevated green. Set up as a parkland layout, holes on both north and south nines are defined by hills and valleys rather than trees. Wayward tee shots bedevil weekend golfers with an assortment of sidehill lies.
