Carvel Country Club to open for three 'sessions' of summer play
The Thomas Carvel Country Club announced it will reopen its Championship 18-hole golf course this summer for three holiday weeks. The course will be open to the public for the weeks surrounding Memorial Day (May 18 – May 31), Independence Day (June 27 – July 5) and Labor Day (August 27 – September 7). The Club Pro Shop has already begun accepting reservations for tee times.
The picturesque 7,100 yard, par 73 course was conceived of by ice cream magnate Thomas Carvel in the late 1960s. His vision was to capture the natural beauty of the Hudson Valley by building a championship golf course that he, his friends, and the local community could enjoy for years to come. The course was designed by noted golf architect William F. Mitchell, who has designed over 40 other courses located from Florida to Massachusetts, including several others in the Hudson Valley Area.
Since its opening in 1969, the Carvel Country Club golf course has been renowned for its breathtaking views of the Catskill Mountains and rolling hills of northern Dutchess County. The signature hole of the hilly course is the 7th hole, par 3 downhill, which offers one of the more stunning vistas of the Hudson Valley scenery. Birds, deer, and other wildlife can easily be spotted from the course and make a round of golf a true outdoor experience.
The course length can range from 6,500 to 7,100 yards in length, creating a welcoming golf destination for players of all skill levels. It is a relatively open course and consequently forgiving, but the length of the holes presents a challenge to even the most seasoned golfers. At the affordable rate of $40 per round on weekdays and $45 on weekends, cart included, it is an ideal destination both for families looking for a good summer activity and for avid golfers looking for a challenging experience.
Food service will be available at the Carvel Country Club throughout the open weeks. Roger Lougheed, owner of Peddler’s Café in the hamlet of Pine Plains, will be managing the restaurant operation. Club rentals and assorted golfing supplies will be offered at the Pro Shop, open 7am – 4pm Monday through Friday and 6am – 4pm on weekends on all days the course is open to the public.
An environmental sustainability policy has recently been initiated at the Thomas Carvel Country Club; the golf course maintenance staff manages the grounds using accepted Best Management Practices, including reduced pesticide use and no-mow buffers, designed to protect natural habitat and water quality and to preserve the natural resources of Dutchess County for generations to come.
The golf course is conveniently located just off the Taconic State Parkway at the Ferris Lane exit, making it easily accessible to golfers from around the community.
